ECAB Lab

This past summer (2023), I worked with Dr. Josh Kurek in the Environmental Change and Aquatic Biomonitoring (ECAB) Lab at Mount Allison as a research assistant. The subway-style maps of watersheds were inspired by lab ventures into the field and were also shared by Dr. Kurek on Twitter. Below is a blog post that incorporated a lot of the work I had been doing with Language Keeper Gordon Francis in Mi’kmaw, and a story map that shows all of the lab field trips for sampling.

Scientific Communication in a Vulnerable Language

The full text of the post can be found here. It was a very interesting challenge to figure out how to talk about the lab work in a language where the records and resources are little help — and I have to thank Gordon again for his help. I especially like what we came up for mercury — alitkewey qasawo’q, “a flowing metal”. Much better than the calque I originally had of jaqale’k suliewey “quick silver”.

No Mud Left Unchurned: ECAB Lab Summer 2023

I really like the arcknight story maps, and how easy they are to make. This one shows everywhere the lab went, with commentary and photos for most of the lakes. Thanks to everyone in the lab team for an excellent summer! Check out the story map.
